Stress

Just 3 weeks left until my dissertation is due and I am feeling the pressure.

If I only had my dissertation to write I think I would be fine, but having two other modules to do and 4 more deadlines is really stressful.

I always conplained about the fact that my course wasn’t practical enough, but all the practical modules came at the worst time.

Although I am stressed I am happy with this final semester. I feel like I’ve learnt more in the past 3 months than I have in my 3 years at uni.

I just can’t wait for all of this to be over!!

Wish me luck!

Korea in the Metro?!

Although Korea is a popular topic in the media at the moment due to high tension between South and North Korea. But today I opened up a copy of Metro (I know shit newspaper) and on one of the first pages, I see this article:

20130410_183710

What is it? It’s 해장국 (Haejangguk) also known as 술국 (Sulguk)!
Well… that’s the original hangover soup but American soldiers in Korea decided to alter the dish a bit. I was really shocked to see that the writer and editor at Metro decided to mention that this is a dish founded in Korea.

However, you may have your facts wrong Metro.

The original Korean Hangover soup is called, as mentioned above, 해장국 (Haejangguk) also known as 술국 (Sulguk). Although Americans altered this dish, the name ‘Yaka Mein’ is a Chinese dish. It is also a noodle soup but it is not Korean.

YaKa Mein

YaKa Mein

해장국 (Haejangguk)/ 술국 (Sulguk)

해장국 (Haejangguk)/ 술국 (Sulguk)

There are two points of view on the origins of Yaka Mein. One is that it originated in New Orleans when Chinese immigrants created a Chinatown (which no longer exists).

The other is that Yaka Mein was introduced to the US by African American troops who fought in the Korean War. Is the confusion caused by Americans changing the name of 술국 (Sulguk) to Yaka Mein?

Anyway, I am glad Korea was in a British newspaper for reasons other than tension between the South and North or Psy.

Writers Block.

Just 5 weeks left until my dissertation is due and I have been suffering from writers block for more than a week. Before then it was just sheer laziness but now I want to write but my mind goes blank.

writers-block

My dissertation topic is so under-researched so I have to do three-four different fields of research. Popular culture, Fandom, Identity & Adoption. Identity among adopted people is such a sensitive subject that many people are scared to research into it.

Stupidly, in my mind I thought it was a good idea to have a unique dissertation title so it would be different. I failed to realise that in doing so it will make my dissertation so much harder to do!

Along with the pain of research, I have to do five interviews that should last between 30 minutes and an hour and a half. Also the people who I have to interview are hard to find in London.

(If there are any adopted Koreans living in London, please contact me! You will be saving my life! Even if you don’t live in London, Skype can connect us so get in touch please!)

But I know all this hard work will pay off. Once the cloud above my head has passed and I manage to start writing, I am confident that I will do well. If this dissertation goes the way I have planned, it will be a success. Not only for the grade I will get and how it will impact my degree, but as an under-researched topic. Having something I can call my own and have published is my dream.

On the 22nd of March, new laws came into force in South Korea. One of the laws which has gained interest in the public eye is a law on indecent exposure. People wearing mini-skirts shorter than a certain length are to be fined ₩50,000 (around £30.00). There seems to be many flaws with this law.

I am far from a lawyer or anyone who has a full understanding on law in general. This is my personal view and opinion on the matter. I do not mean to cause any offence.

short skirts

It is public knowledge that South Korea and North Korea are in constant conflict, yet the fact that one of the first laws put into place during Park Geun-hye’s presidency, is the law against short skirts, is shocking.

I do understand how a ban on mini-skirts can be a positive but this is not a law that needs to be put in place before other laws which could help the country.

Aside from me not thinking that this law is necessary, the law is not even clear enough.

According to Korea Bang, the law states, “Those who show their bare skin excessively in a public place or expose parts of the body that should remain covered, thus making others feel embarrassment or discomfort, are guilty of indecent exposure.”

There is no particular length mentioned. This means that police officers can charge people with indecent exposure when they see fit. This is not fair as there should be a standard length put in place if this law is going to be fair and work. It seems like not much thought has been put into this law.

In the 1970′s during Park Chung-Hee’s (Park Geun-hye’s father) presidency, also had a law in place in regards to indecent exposure and skirt lengths.  During the 1970′s, there was a ban on skirts which ended higher than 20 centimetres above the knee. Mens hair length was also regulated.

parkchunghee

The difference is that Park Chung-Hee made it clear what skirt length was considered as indecent exposure.

Although the Government has stated that they will publish clarificati

on of the law and implement guidelines, I believe this law is still flawed. This is due to it’s timing and what seems to be a priority over other laws which should be more important.

However, as stated above, I can see positives to this law if it is looked into further.

I was shocked at the lack of length of skirts and shorts in Korea, but to me it wasn’t much of a big deal. A friend of mine said to me that she agrees with the law.

It starts with short skirts, and then it ends

up being teen pregnancy and Korea turns out the same as the UK and US with crime rates increasing and a high number of teen pregnancy.

At first I thought my friend was over looking into it but then I realised it could happen. I also realised that Women are seen as sexual objects in this world. Could this law be a benefit for young girls? If their Idols are wearing short skirts, teens tend to do the same in the hopes of being similar to their favourite celebrity. Therefore the banning on short skirts will mean celebrities won’t be sporting short shorts or skirts and in turn, their fans will follow them in wearing decent clothing.

exposure

Finally, when there are problems with South Korea scared of becoming under attack from North Korea launching missiles and testing underground nuclear weapon, is skirt length and indecent exposure really the first law that should be enforced in Park Geun-hye’s presidency? If so, South Korea has an interesting time a head of itself.

I hope that this changes as I want Park Geun-Hye to be a great president. As a woman, I want her to succeed and I am hopeful that she can do well in the rest of her presidency, in spite of her fathers mistakes in presidency.

Learning Korean!

Since I went to Korea I have been learning Korean. I have a few Korean friends here in London who are helping me with the process and we meet often in Korean restaurants.

So, on Friday, I made a new friend. He has been in London for one month. Yesterday we went out for dinner. Ever since we met he has been pushing me to speak Koeran but for some reason I am really shy in front of Korean guys and can’t talk Korean! Yesterday, he was still persistent that I should talk in Korean! So I made an order in Korean. 여기요! 소주 하나주세요.

We had just finished eating and because I ordered in Korean, the waiter asked me in Korean if he could take the plates. He spoke so fast I couldn’t hear! So I told him I couldn’t understand that much Korean! He apologised but I was so happy! It meant my pronunciation was so good that he thought I could understand a lot of Korean!

So, now that I am told that my pronunciation is good, I am going to study harder so I can understand and talk more!

Re-Inspired

This is a blog post which I wrote a year ago on my tumblr. I felt re-inspired again when I read it so thought I’d post it here.

Today, I read an interview that I came across a while back. It’s been a while since I have been this inspired. Ryan Feng, I give thanks to you for being amazing. So the interview I read was on The Other Asians by Julie Zhan. Although I had skimmed through the interview, I am happy I came across it again.

I recently made a post called Losing Faith , which was about me not being happy with Quest any-more. I now realise that I wrote that post when I was upset. Now I have stopped and decided to look at my opinion in a different light. And Feng made me remember why I love Quest.

Feng speaks about how the crew work together and how they hate each other but in a brotherly way:

‘But it worked out for us because we hated each other in a loving way.Like I can hate on my crew, but no one else can. I got their backs andwe love each other.’

But, Feng also inspired me in other ways than just re-finding my love for Quest. He speaks about who he is. This has inspired me to embrace myself and not care so much about what others are like.

‘Be who you are, and let that be the definition. It’s like being in love. What does that mean to me? What does that mean to you? It’s differentfor everyone, but there’s only one word for it.’

Everyone is different.

Feng thank you for making me realise that you can pursue more than one career. Although you said yourself you aren’t a a photographer or a writer, you made me realise that If I want, I can be creative in more than one way, like artists.

‘What I can express in dancing won’t come out in writing. But what I canwrite can’t be expressed in dancing. What I photograph can depict whatwriting can’t, etc, etc. Those are my three main avenues that I feelcomfortable expressing myself in. Will I become a photographer orwriter, I don’t know.’

I am going to confess that I dance in my room! haha. It’s embarrassing but, oh well! And although I don’t see myself becoming a dancer, your words of wisdom to aspiring dancers, has inspired me to get serious about what I love to do and what I want to be part of my life.

‘If you want to dance and you want dance to be a part of your life, justdo it. You don’t have to book a job or have other people tell you you’regood to be a dancer. But if you want to book jobs, go out of your comfort zone and learn everything. Get used to people telling you you’re not good.’

So, thanks for inspiring me again Feng!

Oh and congrats on making it to Europe with Quest! It wasn’t the whole of Quest, but I enjoyed watching you perform with LMFAO and I think I was screaming more for Quest than LMFAO! =P Although I didn’t actually get to meet you guys, it was an amazing experience to see you perform!

Hope to see you in London again!!

Missing Lee Byung Hun!

I work for a company on weekends. Most of the time I work from home as our lovely company has provided us with laptops so it is possible. However, every now and then we are asked to go into the office for training and meetings. One weekend we were told to go in to our lovely office which is located in Monument right next to London Bridge.

I know, what the hell has this got to do with Lee Byung Hun?

Well, on this day, there was a movie being filmed outside our office. I had no idea that the movie being filmed was, Red 2. The scene that was being filmed was an Asian man being shot.

doh1

This Asian man was Lee Byung Hun. I was 10 foot steps away from him!!! It only clicked in my mind this week when I finished watching the Korean drama Iris, in which Lee Byung Hun was the main character.

This weekend I was also in the office and it hurt so bad to know that I was in walking distance of such an amazing (and damn sexy) actor!! Lee Byung Hun is an inspiration for Koreans and people interested in Korean culture as he has had roles in a number of Hollywood movies, such as G.I. Joe, Red and Red 2.

Anyway, I suppose it wasn’t meant to be. I wasn’t meant to meet Lee Byung Hun that weekend. =[ I hope they have to re-film a scene when I am in the office again! Haha! It’s wishful thinking but you never know!

Only two days after the finale of the Big Bang Alive Tour, G-Dragon tweets about his 1st solo world tour!!!!

Although G-Dragon only tweeted a picture of a poster for his solo tour, which is titled simply titled ’1st World Tour’, excitement is in the air!

gdragonsolotour

I really hope he comes to London as although most artists state they are doing a world tour, the tend to leave us Brits out of the equation!  But I a hopeful since Big Bang came to London for the Alive tour and G-Dragon returned for a few days last week.

Now, the wait for dates begins!

I just hope ticket prices aren’t as crazy as the Alive Tour was! =P

No regrets

As some of you know, I was recently dating a guy from Korea. Unfortunately, he went back to Korea and he decided that a long distance relationship was not the way he wanted to go. Although I was upset, I am grateful for the time we spent together in London and while most people will regret everything in my situation, I don’t. I did doubt that a long distance relationship would work but I had the intentions of trying it but I suppose it really wasn’t meant to be.

Although we were aware that our time was going to be short when we started dating, I had a great time with him. I really enjoyed his company and I felt that we had a connection. I’m usually really awkward when there is silence, but I felt so comfortable with you.

I am far from the adventurous type but I was more open to trying things out of my norm with him. We went to Liverpool and Manchester on our last weekend together, you took me to my first football match, we went to my favourite museum, the theatre and would just hangout when we wanted to. You were really supportive when I found out about my mum and you asked about her progress almost everyday, as if you had known her. We had a lot in common that we didn’t realise. I loved the way you would ask me what I wanted to eat even though you knew I would always answer, ‘I don’t know, anything, I don’t mind!’.

And our last sunset together was beautiful.

Our time together was short, but our relationship meant more to me than any of my longer relationships. When I cried on the coach I must have really freaked you out! I’m sorry. =P I was emotional from lack of sleep and I kept thinking about the fact it was our last weekend together. I miss you but to have you as a friend is awesome and I hope we will meet again when I go back to Korea. I know time difference is a big problem and you are probably really busy but please stay in contact as often as you can.

The only thing I regret, is not telling you how thankful I am for everything you did for me and our time together.

Manchester vs Liverpool

I’m not much of a football fan but the guy I’m dating loves football. He goes back to Korea in two days so today, we are going to the match.
Manchester United vs Liverpool!

As a lead up to the match, yesterday we visited Liverpool & Then got the coach up to Manchester last night.

Stupidly, I left my camera at home after contimplating a thousand times! I didn’t think Liverpool & Manchester had much to take photos of. But boy I was wrong!

So when he sends the photos he took on his phone to me, I will do a blog post on which city I think is more beautiful. =]
